Ciena Launches Industry’s Most Efficient Pluggable Optical Engine to Power AI‑Driven Data Centers

Dino DiPerna, SVP Global R&D, Ciena

Ciena has introduced the Vesta 200 6.4T CPX, the industry’s highest‑density and lowest‑power pluggable co‑packaged optics (CPO) engine, marking its first major product launch since acquiring Nubis Communications. Purpose‑built for hyperscalers, cloud providers, and data center operators, the new solution tackles one of the most pressing challenges in large‑scale AI environments: delivering massive, efficient optical interconnect capacity while dramatically reducing power consumption.

Designed to cut energy usage by up to 70%, Vesta 200 enables operators to evolve their architectures for both scale‑out and next‑generation scale‑up AI networks. With 200G/lane performance, the pluggable engine is optimized for emerging 100 Tb/s and 200 Tb/s ASICs, as well as NICs and XPUs that require ultra‑dense chip‑edge connectivity.

“Our customers want density, efficiency, and an open ecosystem and with Vesta, we’ve delivered exactly that.”

Dino DiPerna, SVP Global R&D, Ciena

Dino DiPerna, Ciena’s Senior Vice President of Global Research & Development, said the launch removes long‑standing obstacles to CPO adoption. “We’re delivering the industry’s first truly flexible, open pluggable optical engine,” he noted. “Vesta delivers higher density, greater power efficiency, and ultra‑high reliability, all within an open, multi‑vendor ecosystem exactly what operators need to scale AI clusters more efficiently, with less space and lower costs.”

The Vesta 200 6.4T CPX integrates several breakthrough capabilities, including a compact 2D fiber interconnect that maximizes density for space‑constrained servers and switches, retimer‑free linear‑drive architecture that expands electrical loss budgets, and co‑optimized silicon photonics paired with high‑reliability SiGe drivers and TIAs.

The solution also enables a fully open optical networking ecosystem, offering IEEE 802.3dj‑compliant interfaces and CPX electrical interconnects that promote interoperability across ASIC, optical, and interconnect vendors an important step in building a competitive CPO supply chain.

Industry analysts and partners say the launch comes at a critical moment as AI infrastructure demands soar. LightCounting’s CEO, Vladimir Kozlov, said Ciena is helping establish “the competitive CPO ecosystem operators have been waiting for,” while Accton Technology and Samtec praised the solution’s density, power efficiency, and readiness for next‑generation AI systems.

With Vesta 200, Ciena reinforces its position as a global leader in high‑speed connectivity and sets a new benchmark for scalable, energy‑efficient optical interconnects powering the AI era.
